Abandoned vehicle burns in South Tamaqua

Just before 10:30 p.m. last night, West Penn Police and firefighters from West Penn and Mahoning Valley fire companies responded to a call of a vehicle fire located on Dairy Road in South Tamaqua. When they arrived, they noticed a van, parked just off Dairy Road on a small dirt road, fully engulfed in flames. The burning van, which was unoccupied, was located on a dirt road next to a fish hatchery, Agro Systems Inc. and WJ Aquaculture Inc., located at 181 Dairy Road in South Tamaqua. Firefighters used foam and water to extinguish the flames. Bright green and white glowing flames and sparks were also emitting from the burning vehicle due to the fact that some parts of the van were made with magnesium, a flammable metal which interacts violently with water when burning. West Penn Township Police and the property owner stated the vehicle wasn't there an hour prior to the response. Power lines located just above the burning vehicle were also slightly melted. The black 1998 van was reported to belong to Lydia Sloves of South 13th Street in Reading. The vehicle was not listed in the police NIS, Network Information System; meaning nobody reported it as stolen. West Penn Fire Police closed Dairy Road for the duration of the response and until the vehicle was towed from the property. West Penn Police Officer Dale Osenbach noted the incident as very suspicious and is still investigating the incident.
