Tamaqua board clarification

Tamaqua School Superintendent Carol Makuta offered a clarification to the article published Wednesday concerning the district's 2011-2012 budget, offering assurances about the suggested furloughing of teachers.

"The district is not furloughing any faculty members," explained the superintendent. "During the entire budget process, the school board was committed to avoiding furloughing/firing teachers at all costs. The elimination of 10 teaching positions is related to retirements, resignations and the re-assignment of some staff members."Professional positions eliminated, through attrition and re-assignments, include one high school guidance counselor, one high school social studies teacher, one high school business teacher, one elementary/PSSA prep teacher and six elementary teachers. The re-alignment will save the district $265,000.
