Tamaqua man takes own life at Lebanon jail

State police at the Jonestown barracks report a Tamaqua man took his own life on Friday at the Lebanon County Correctional Facility, South Lebanon Township.

Richard Wagner, 58, was pronounced dead at the Good Samaritan Hospital, Lebanon, by Dr. Jeffrey Yokum, county coroner.Police said Wagner used a bedsheet to hang himself from an upper bunk bed rail.He was found around 2:45 p.m.Officials said prison staff members performed CPR on the man but were unable to revive him.Wagner had been an inmate at the prison since he was arrested on Dec. 2 by North Cornwall Township Police.He was awaiting legal proceedings on charges of recklessly endangering another person, simple assault, terroristic threats and aggravated assault.Police said the charges stemmed from an incident where the Tamaqua man struck another man with an ax handle.He was being held at the prison on $75,000 bail.
