The Jim Thorpe Borough Council expressed an interest in reversing recent changes in downtown parking meter policy at its regularly scheduled meeting Thursday.

In the last year the meters have changed from 25 cents for a half hour minimum to a 50-cent an hour minimum.This move has upset the Jim Thorpe Chamber of Commerce, who view the change as unpopular among visitors. The Chamber of Commerce has requested that the meters be returned to their old format of 25 cents for a half hour.New ordinances will also be created to reflect the actual enforcement of the meters. Currently the meter ordinance requires that they be policed from 9 a.m to 6 p.m. on Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Saturday and not at all on Sunday. In actuality the meters are only enforced until 5 o'clock Monday through Friday and from 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.The decision to enforce less on Saturday results from the fact that it is viewed unfavorably to visitors of the downtown who are already spending money there.Further, the council is moving toward a decision to remove most of the six 15-minute parking meters in the downtown. They are to be replaced with 30-minute meters. Two possible exceptions to this decision are the 15-minute meters outside of Dugan's store on Broadway.Broadway bends at that location and the decision to keep the 15-minute meters there is influenced by the fact that it will help prevent traffic jams and accidents.A representative of the Chamber of Commerce was at the council meeting to present council with a check to cover the expense of the meter replacement.
