DALLAS, Pa. Careers in the sport management industry, job outlooks and the fun of being able to work in a sport you love were all topics of conversation at the 10th annual Sport Management Roundtable at Misericordia University.

Officers of the Misericordia University Sport Management Club arranged the interactive program to provide firsthand information about careers in the growing sport management industry. A panel of leading professionals in the field discussed their positions, career paths, recent employment trends and what it is like to work in the multi-billion dollar industry.The panel included Misericordia Sport Management Program alumni Kevin Heaney '06, manager of communications, Richard Childress Racing (NASCAR); Kristen Black '04, '08, athletic director, Panther Valley High School; Mike Trudnak '04, director of corporate partnerships, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees; and Chris Sipsky '06, director of group ticket sales/service, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins; along with Steve Barr, director of media relations, Little League International.Among the participants were students and their parents from across the region, including groups from Lackawanna Trail High School and Lackawanna College. Also, current Misericordia students in both the sport management and business administration majors and students accepted into the sport management program for the 2010-11 academic year took part.Misericordia University offers the region's most tenured baccalaureate degree program in sport management within its College of Professional Studies and Social Sciences. The major allows students to combine their love of sport with the skills necessary to become professionals in the industry.The program offers a business-oriented curriculum that has been devised to produce graduates who will be successful in today's sports management environment as well as prepared for its future, including the areas of college, semi-professional and professional athletics, as well as other related fields. The list of potential employment opportunities includes, but is not limited to, professional sport managers, intercollegiate sport managers, sport marketers, sport arena managers, and commercial recreational facility directors.The program included a luncheon where prospective students were given the chance to talk one-on-one with panelists.
