3 Lehighton men facing riot and assault charges
Three Lehighton residents are facing riot charges as a result of an incident on Wednesday in the Mount Pocohontas Development in Penn Forest Township.
Lodged in the Carbon County Correctional Facility in lieu of $10,000 bail each are Todd Kerschner, 41; Jonathan Exner, 19, and Dylan Smith, 20.
Besides the riot charges, they also are charged with simple assault, criminal mischief, criminal conspiracy, harassment, and disorderly conduct.
The charges were filed by State Police at Fern Ridge Barracks.
Trooper Eric Temarantz, the investigating officer, said the charges stem from an incident at about 9:30 p.m. on July 14.
The trooper said on that date, a large number of vehicles entered the Mount Pocohontas Development "in a convoy fashion."
The occupants of the vehicles exited and several were holding bats, crowbars, and other weapons, said the trooper.
Police said at the scene, one juvenile was assaulted and then chased by the individuals wielding bats and clubs. The actors then approached and surrounded a vehicle full of juvenile occupants. They began to smash the windows of the vehicle before chasing the occupants into the woods.
Two cellular phones as well as $60 in chase were taken from the vehicle after the occupants fled, according to police.
Trooper Termarantz said the juvenile who was assaulted suffered moderate injuries.
Surveillance footage indicated Kerschner, Exner, and Smith as taking part in the incident, police said.
The investigation continues with additional arrests pending.
