ron gower/times news Tamaqua defenders Jake Fegley (left) and Matt Kurek (right) try to steal the ball away from PJ Johnson of Jim Thorpe.

Losing has a tendency to become contagious, and if left untreated, it can certainly infect a program with a sense of frustration and futility.

Just ask Tamaqua head coach Caszy Kosciolek and Jim Thorpe head coach Brian Carroll.

Coming into last night's Schuylkill League Division 1 contest, Tamaqua had managed to win just once in the past 36 days (losers of 9 of its past 10 games), while Jim Thorpe had dropped six straight games after starting the year 5-2.

The game of basketball is often times decided by runs and momentum. In last night's Colonial League battle between Northern Lehigh and Wilson, it was the Bulldogs who took advantage of the runs more effectively to pull out a 39-34 win.

The Bulldogs darted out of the gates with a 12-0 run and later had to withstand a 15-0 spurt by the Warriors, before holding on down the stretch for the victory.

Mike Feifel/TIMES NEWS Northwestern's Payton Bachman goes up for a shot between Palisades defenders Tyler Krchnavi, left, and Luke Caughney.

One of the Cardinal Rules of sports is to never take an opponent lightly.

Northwestern might have expected an easy time against a Palisades team that headed into this week winless for the season. But the Tigers fell victim to the visiting Purple Pirates, who went on a 24-0 run in the second half and took home a 41-26 win.

"This one's extremely frustrating," said Northwestern head coach Dan Eddinger. "We walked into this gym expecting to win tonight and we just didn't do it. We were bad in all facets of the game tonight."

bob ford/times news Jim Thorpe's Celeste Robinson (left) prepares to make a pass as Tamaqua's Kayla Hope defends.

Resiliency is the term that may best describe the play of the Tamaqua girl's basketball team this season. The Lady Raiders (7-5) have been hot, winning five straight games after a 2-5 start. Tamaqua showed their fight once again last night storming back from a 29-16 half-time deficit to challenge the Olympians in the fourth quarter getting as close as two points in the fourth. Thorpe's transition game proved to be too much however, as the Lady Olympians pulled away to get the 52-45 Schuylkill League Division I victory.

Saturday was a good night for the Weatherly girls' basketball team as it picked up its third win of the season.

Last night's Schuylkill League game against Schuylkill Haven turned out to be far from that, however.

If anything could have went wrong for his team it surely did, and Weatherly head coach Paul Hadzick had no problem saying it after his players dropped a 32-26 decision to the Hurricanes.

"We didn't shoot," Hadzick said. "We didn't play good defense. We didn't rebound.

"All of the fundamental things of the game of basketball we didn't do tonight."

TERRY AHNER/TIMES NEWS Longtime sports fan Harry Brown of Palmerton has attended Palmerton Area School District athletic events for 45 years.

Over the past half century, Palmerton has produced its share of star athletes, championship-caliber teams, and record-breaking performances.

Through it all, a familiar face has witnessed those triumphs and tribulations from his perch high up in the stands as the district's quintessential "sixth man".

Indeed, few have become as synonymous with Palmerton athletic events and displayed as much sheer "Bomber Pride" as borough resident Harry Brown.

It's been that way since Brown's days as a student in the district, despite the fact he didn't play any organized sports.

MIKE FEIFEL/TIMES NEWS Lehighton's Zach Coleman grabs the leg of Pennridge's Tom Roeder in the 160-pound match between the two teams at Saturday's Lehighton duals before recording a first period fall. Pennridge won the match 42-36.

Marian, Northern Lehigh and Weatherly picked up boys basketball wins over the weekend, as did the Palmerton, Tamaqua and Weatherly girls.

Panther Valley also managed a victory on the mats.

Thorpe holds off N'western

Jim Thorpe's 41-36 non-league victory over Northwestern on Saturday left both coaches talking about the postseason.

For the Olympians, who improved to 11-1, it was the second of three consecutive games against top flight competition. Thorpe opened a demanding five-day stretch with Pine Grove, follwed that with Northwestern and will close it out against Tamaqua. It had to fight through Saturday's game without flu-ridden starter Kristin Lawrence.
