Seniors compete in outdoor events
The Carbon County Senior Games are getting ready to wrap up, and while South Carbon County has a commanding lead, the main point of the games is to bring seniors together for fun, friendship and move.
On Tuesday, the seniors took over Baer Memorial Park in Lehighton to compete in the day’s outdoors events.
After the outdoor events, the combined scores were South Carbon County, consisting of Lehighton and Palmerton, 786; while the North Carbon County seniors, made up of Jim Thorpe, Panther Valley and Weatherly, have 403 points.
Outdoor events included the Philip Steigerwalt Memorial Walk, softball throw, horseshoes and bocce.
Competitor Richard Contrady of Weatherly was this year’s Philip Steigerwalt Memorial Walk recipient for his third place finish in the walk. The honor is bestowed on the man in the 60 to 64 category who comes in third in memory of the late Philip Steigerwalt, who collapsed and died while competing in the games in 2007. He would have finished third in the walking event.
