Dr. Scott Barry Crown, Ph.D.

Scott Barry Crown, the son of Barry and Wanda Crown of Effort was hooded as a doctor of philosophy in chemical engineering at the University of Delaware on May 24.

Over the past five years, Crown attended the University of Delaware and published six manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals. On May 17 he presented the defense of his Ph.D. dissertation, Novel Methodologies for Isotopic Tracer and Experiment Design: Applications to 13C-Metabolic Flux Analysis and Isotopic Studies.

Samantha Miller graduated on May 21 from Fairleigh Dickinson University in Teaneck, N.J., with a master's degree in forensic psychology.

Miller graduated from Marian Catholic High School in 2007 and from Kutztown University in 2011 with a degree in psychology. She has accepted a position as a residential counselor with Carrier Clinic in New Jersey.

Miller is the daughter of Mike and Kathy Miller of Tamaqua.

Knappenberger

Alyssa Knappenberger, daughter of Chris and Kelly Knappenberger of Lehighton, attained the dean's list at DeSales University for the spring semester. She is pursuing a bachelor of science degree in nursing at the university.

Alyssa is a 2009 graduate of Lehighton Area High School where she was a member of the National Honor Society. She also played field hockey and was very active in Music Express.

McGavin

Laura Rhiannon McGavin, a senior majoring in psychology, with a minor in art, was named to the dean's list at the University of Cumberlands, for the past semester. She attained a 3.5 cumulative GPA and met other conditions. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lenny McGavin of Jim Thorpe and the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edgar A. Poe Jr. of Jim Thorpe.

Jenna B. Ritter of Palmerton, has accepted membership in the National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS).

Bucknell University has conferred bachelor's and master's degrees to students who completed their graduation requirements during this past spring semester. Degrees were awarded May 19 for studies in liberal arts and professional programs in engineering, education, management and music.

Kelly R. Purcell, Barnesville, daughter of Terrance and Virginia Purcell of Barnesville, and a 2009 graduate of Mahanoy Area High School, graduated cum laude with a bachelor of science degree in neuroscience.

Julian

Nickolas Julian of Lake Hauto has graduated from Saint Joseph's University in Philadelphia with a bachelor of science degree in biology with a concentration in psychology on May 11.

Julian graduated summa cum laude with a grade-point average of 3.91. He was inducted into the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society and was the vice president of the Pre-Medical Honor Society. He has been named to the dean's list for four consecutive years while attending Saint Joseph's University.

Semmel

Brittany Lynn Semmel daughter of Mike and Kim Semmel of Lehighton has decided to further her academic and performing arts career at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia .

"This is an amazing opportunity to study at one of the top performing arts schools in the nation," said Brittany, who has been dancing since she was 2 years old at Dance with Kim School of Performing Arts LLC. She will now have a chance to take her talents to the next level.

Joseph Paluck has been notified by the Arts and Sciences Department of Drexel University that he has been placed on the dean's list for the 2012-13 semester. He is majoring in the literary arts with a minor in business. He has a 3.6 grade point average.

Currently, Paluck is serving on a Drexel University internship to write a program for the creative arts in elementary education.

Paluck is the son of Joseph and Lyn Paluck of Lake Hauto. He is a 2009 graduate of Tamaqua Area High School.
