Holiday help

The Tamaqua Salvation Army, 105 W. Broad St., will be accepting registrations for families in need of a little holiday help this year. This includes holiday food baskets, Toys for Tots and an Angel Tree.

Dates to register will be Oct. 21, 22 and 23 only, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. A makeup date, for food assistance only, is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Nov. 29.

Panther Valley

Golden Agers

The Sept. 22 meeting of the Panther Valley Golden Agers opened with a prayer and the singing of "God Bless America."

Guests Rob Mikulski and Jackie Vasquez presented a video on gambling addiction among the elderly.

President Irene Hudasky read a letter from Diakon on seeking help with health insurance for those on Social Security.

Hospitality committee for October and November are Fran Hager and Dee Neifert.

The next meeting will be Monday at St. John's Slovak Lutheran Church Social Hall beginning at 1 p.m.

Band festival

The 18th annual Land of the Running Water Marching Band Adjudication, hosted by the Tamaqua Area Raider Marching Band, will be held Saturday at the Tamaqua High School Sports Stadium. This year's event will feature 10 participating high school marching bands: Annville-Cleona, Bangor, Exeter Township, Mahanoy Area, Minersville, Nativity B.V.M., Pottsville Area, Shenandoah Valley, Tri Valley and Wilson.

Gates will open at 5 p.m. and the competition will begin at 6:30 p.m.

The Eldred Township Historical Society will hold its basket bingo on Sunday. The doors will open at noon and bingo will begin at 1 p.m.

The Eldred Township Halloween Parade's registration deadline is this Sunday for the Oct. 19 parade. The rain date Oct. 26.

Halloween parade

Registration forms are now available for the annual Tamaqua Halloween Parade, which is set for Oct. 28, beginning at 7 p.m. Forms are available at the Tamaqua Chamber of Commerce Office, 114 W. Broad St.

Completed forms must include the name, address and phone number of a contact person, as well as the entrant's theme, number of floats, vehicles and marchers.

All participants will be called in advance of the parade with their position, set up location and entry number. The rain date is Oct. 29.

Summit Hill

Hydrant flushing

The Summit Hill Water Authority will be flushing hydrants Monday and Tuesday.

You may experience low water pressure and water discoloration during this time. The bororough apologizes for the inconvenience.

Pro-Life rosary

St. Joseph's Church in Summit Hill will sponsor a Pro-Life Rosary at 2 p.m. on Sunday in the Bloomingdale Cemetery on Lentz Trail.

It will feature the Glorious Mysteries and will be held by the altar for the unborn.

Please bring your rosary and a lawn chair.

Summit Hill

Fall tree plantings

The Summit Hill Shade Tree Commission will be conducting its fall tree plantings on Oct. 25 and 26.

Anyone interested in sponsoring a tree to be planted along the streets or in memory or in honor of someone may call John Kupec at 645-9644 or Lou Vermillion at 645-9772 for information.

Trees will be ordered in mid October.

Volunteers to help plant, water and clean up are welcome as well as any contributions to the Shade Tree Commission's efforts.

Holy Trinity happenings

Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 502 Lafayette Ave. Palmerton, will hold worship services at 8 and 10:45 a.m. Sunday.

Sunday School is at 9:30 a.m. During the 10:45 a.m. service will be a Children's Sermon. The Worship and Music Committee will meet at 9 a.m.

At 7 p.m. Monday the Finance Committee will meet. The committee needs new members. Any interested member is asked to call the church office. Meetings are held the second Monday night of the month.

Western Pocono Lioness

The Western Pocono Lioness Club will meet at 6 p.m. Oct. 28, beginning with a social hour with Lioness dressing in their best 1960s-themed outfits. The business meeting begins at 7 p.m. The meeting will be held at the American Legion in Gilbert.
