Container gardening

Penn State Master Gardeners of Schuylkill County will present a session on container gardening from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. June 11 at First United Church of Christ, Route 61, Schuylkill Haven.

The master gardeners will explain the ins and outs of growing, herbs, vegetables and flowers in containers for your porch and patio. Correct planting techniques, proper pot sizes and the correct potting mix will all be discussed.

Participants will leave with a better idea of how to use containers, fresh ideas and some potting soil.

Holy Trinity

Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 502 Lafayette Ave., Palmerton, will hold worship services at 8 and 10:45 a.m. Sunday. During the 10:45 a.m. service will be communion, and confirmation will also take place.

The last day of Sunday school will be June 7 with Sundaes in the Park. On June 21, Holy Trinity will begin its summer worship service at 9 a.m.

Miller Keystone Blood Mobile

The Miller Keystone Bloodmobile will be at St. Katharine Drexel Church, 124 E. Abbott St., Lansford, on June 15 from 1-6 p.m. in honor of Ruthie Meterko.

Appointments are recommended and can be made by contacting John Karnish at 570-645-3994. Walk-ins are also appreciated.

Al-Anon meeting

The Al-Anon group meets Mondays at 7:15 p.m. at St. Katherine Drexel Church Hall in Lansford.

Al-Anon is a nonprofit worldwide support organization helping families and friends of loved ones suffering from addiction.

Trinity Happenings

Sunday worship with Holy Communion at Trinity Lutheran Church, 175 S. Third St., starts at 9 a.m. Guest pastor the Rev. Jerry Smith presides. Coffeehouse fellowship follows.

Free yoga sessions are available Friday afternoons, 2-3 p.m. Enter at the Third Street office door to go to the youth room.

Bring your own mat and water. No baby-sitting service is available.

First Tuesday quiet Communion is 10 a.m. June 2.

Summer reading

The Tamaqua public Library will host six weeks of summer reading fun for children between the ages of 2 and 12.

The summer reading program, "Every Hero Has A Story," will be offered on different days and times in order to reach the most readers.

For ages 6 to 12, sessions will be held from 3 to 4:30 p.m. and from 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Mondays.

For the younger group, ages 2 to 5, sessions will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

Theater auditions

The Tamaqua Area Community Theatre will be holding open auditions for its upcoming production of "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee." Actors 12 and older are needed.

A one-minute monologue and a 30-second song are needed for the audition. The production company is able to provide sample material.

Auditions will be held June 12 and June 13, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the Tamaqua Community Art Center, 125 Pine St., Tamaqua

Dinner benefit

An event organized and financed by Thrivent Financial will benefit Veterans Assisted Living Out Reach in Jonas.

The benefit dinner will take place at the Light House Building of Christ Hamilton Lutheran Church, 419 Bossardsville Road, Stroudsburg, at 6 p.m. today.

VFW Ladies Auxiliary

The regular monthly meeting of the Ladies Auxiliary to Nesquehoning Memorial VFW Post 8008 was held on May 3 at the post home.

Senior Vice President Christa Kattner presided at the session. Department newsletters 9 and 10 were read and filed for action.

Buddy Poppy weekend was held at Redner's the weekend of May 8-10. The Poppy Queen is Cienna Padora and her court will be Sofia Simchak, Josephine Simchak and Marissa Lilly.

The Poppy King is Jacob Ellis and his court will be Jesse Ellis.

The West End Democrats will hold a rally at 7 p.m. May 28 at the West End Fire Company on Route 715 in Brodheadsville.

Smart Driver course

A 4-hour Smart Driver course, as presented by an AARP volunteer, will be given at the Polk Firehouse in Kresgeville beginning at 9 a.m. June 8 for those who can provide proof that they took the 8-hour driver refresher course within the past 36 months.
