Slatington Lions Club

The Slatington Lions Club will hold a board meeting at 7 p.m. Aug. 11 at the Skeet Club.

Lion birthday wishes go out to Rodney Werley (Aug. 4) and Walter Niedermeyer (Aug. 5).

The Lions Club is always looking for new members, and memberships are available.

Palmerton Area Historical Society will hold its annual picnic on Monday, Aug. 9, at the farm of a society member, Bert Holczman, Andreas. The raindate is Tuesday, Aug. 10. This event is available to society members and guests only. Arrival time is anytime after 4 p.m. Attendees are asked to bring a covered dish, casserole or dessert. If you haven't already done so, sign up by calling (610) 377-3769 by Monday, Aug. 2.

An American Red Cross Bloodmobile held in Tamaqua on July 21 collected 68 units of the "gift of life." The event was held in the gymnasium of the Tamaqua Salvation Army Center.

Park concert

At 7 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 8, the Hazleton Band will perform a concert in the Palmerton Borough Park. Please bring a lawn chair. In case of rain, the concert will be held in the Borough Hall, 443 Delaware Ave.

Community meal

A free community meal will be held from 5-6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 10, at St. John's United Church of Christ, 891 Columbia Ave., Palmerton. Come for a free meal and fellowship.

Lehighton Area High School yearbooks have arrived. Books can be picked up in the high school office from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

New student orientation

An orientation program for all students entering Lehighton Area High School for the first time will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 17, in the high school auditorium.

PV senior center

Fran Craigie, manager of the Panther Valley Senior Center in Nesquehoning has announced the list of activities for August

Beginning Aug. 2 there will be pay bingo at 11 a.m. Aug. 3 is line dancing in the morning and a Sunshine meeting later. Aug. 4 will be game of Pictionary at 11 a.m. Aug. 5 is penny game at 11 a.m. and off to Heisler's after lunch. Wii games will be played on Aug. 6

Smoke detectors

The Tamaqua Fire Department is giving away a limited number of free smoke detectors to interested borough residents. All residents are eligible, but priority will be given to homes with children under the age of 18 and/or elderly residents. The only stipulation is that all free detectors must be installed by a representative of the Tamaqua Fire Department

The free detectors are available thanks to a grant administered by the state Fire Commissioner's Office and the Schuylkill County Fire Chiefs Association.

Chestnuthill supervisors

The Chestnuthilll board of supervisors is scheduled to meet at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 3, at the township municipal building on Route 715.

UMW picnic

United Methodist Women of Effort UMC will host the Eighth United Methodist Women Family Picnic for the congregational "family" at 6:30 p.m., Monday, Aug. 9, at the church. The UMW will provide the meats and drinks, but other UMC host attendees are asked to bring a covered dish to share.

LONG POND - Elliott Sadler isn't ready to be written off.

On Saturday at Pocono Raceway, he showed why. Pulling away on the second attempt at a green-white-checkered-flag finish, Sadler won the Pocono Mountains 125 Camping World Truck Series race from the pole, his first victory since 2004 in any of NASCAR's top three touring series.
