Trinity happenings

First Saturday worship with Holy Communion at Trinity Lutheran Church, 175 S. Third St. in Lehighton, is at 5 p.m.

The Rev. Michael Frost, pastor of Zions Stone Church in New Ringgold, presides.

Sunday worship with Holy Communion is at 9 a.m. Guest pastor, the Rev. Richard Baumann, presides. Coffeehouse fellowship follows.


Wendy and Thomas Williams of Lehighton observed their fourth wedding anniversary on June 19.

Summit Hill

Flag program

The Summit Hill Lions Club continues its American flag program in memory and honor of veterans from Summit Hill. The flag will fly in Ludlow Park in memory or honor of the veterans.

Family members of veterans, or veterans themselves, can request to be scheduled by contacting Joseph O'Gurek at 570-645-5171.

During the week of July 7, the flag will be flown in honor of Daniel E. Gieniec, who served as a corporal in the Army during the Philippines/Pacific Teatre of Operations during World War II.

Night out

The Tamaqua Safety Initiative is organizing events for National Night Out, an effort to help fight crime on America's streets. The event will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Aug. 5, with most activities planned for the area near the Tamaqua Art Center at 125 Pine St.

Entertainment will be provided by "Original Sounds." To date, 15 organizations have indicated they will be taking part in the event.

The Tamaqua Salvation Army will be conducting a Kidz Karnival, from 2 to 9 p.m. that day at the North Railroad Street parking lot.

Lions board

The Western Pocono Lions Club Board of Directors will meet at the Western Pocono Community Library in Brodheadsville at 7 o'clock tonight. All Lions are welcome.

PVEN Board meets

The board of directors of the Pleasant Valley Ecumenical Network is set to meet at 9 a.m. Thursday at Zion Lutheran Church in Brodheadsville.

Blood drive

Getz Personal Care Home, Route 534 in Jonas, will host an American Red Cross blood drive from 1 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday. Call 800-RED-CROSS to schedule an appointment.

Garden club

The Lewistown Valley Garden Club met June 24 at the home of Helen Moyer. A number of special guests from the Schuylkill Garden Club were in attendance.

During the business session, the group discussed the upcoming Schuylkill County Fair, then toured Moyer's gardens, which feature a number of unusual flowers and shrubs.

The next meeting will be held July 22 at Leiby's Grove. Hot dogs will be provided. Members are to bring a covered dish, dinnerware and beverages.

Knitting Club

The Palmerton Area Library Knitting Club will meet 6 to 8 p.m. Monday. The club is open to anyone wishing to learn to knit or crochet, or who needs help with a project. The club is free and materials will be provided. The group meets the first and third Mondays of each month.

Community meal

A free community meal will be served from 5 to 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, at St. John's United Church of Christ, 891 Columbia Ave., Palmerton. All are invited for a free meal and fellowship.

Clothing giveaway

Two Jim Thorpe area Lutheran churches will begin their annual clothing collection and giveaways.

St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Albrightsville, has announced the following dates for collection of good, clean clothing and shoes: from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m., Friday, July 11, and Saturday, July 12; from noon until 3 p.m. Sunday, July 13; and from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Monday, July 14, and Tuesday, July 15.

VFW Ladies Auxiliary

The regular monthly meeting of the Ladies Auxiliary to Nesquehoning Memorial VFW Post 8008 was held June 10, at the post home. Treasurer, Maureen Hirochek, presided at the session.

Membership stands at 60 for 2014, down from 66 last year. Three members passed away during the year.

The department convention was held in Lancaster June 18-21.

Donations were made to the National Presidents Visit to Pennsylvania in September and to the lunch program sponsored by Meeds Church.

Dear Tamaqua

The next "Dear Tamaqua" Write Night will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. July 8 at the Tamaqua Community Art Center, 125 Pine St., Tamaqua.

"Dear Tamaqua" is a collaborative effort, spearheaded by the Tamaqua Safety Initiative. It was launched to encourage community wide pride, focusing on Tamaqua's unique identity.

Residents are encouraged to share thoughts and stories of the community through written word, original music, video, poetry, visual art, etc.
