The Tamaqua Area Faith and Fellowship Network will again sponsor its "One Nation Under God" July 4th food collection and distribution event. The group hopes to feed 50 area families by providing picnic-type foods to families in need.

The communitywide effort is looking for donations, both monetary and food items. Needed items include ketchup, mustard, Betty Crocker Suddenly Salads, baked beans, potatoes, chips, pretzels, Jell-O, cake mix, icing, brownies and apple sauce.

Honoring first


Tamaqua Masonic Lodge 238, Free and Accepted Masons, will honor all first responders from the greater Tamaqua area today. Festivities will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Masonic Lodge, Route 54 and Shawn Avenue in Hometown.

The evening will include a brief ceremony, presentation of pins to the responders and refreshments.

All EMS personnel, firefighters and law enforcement officers, and their families and friends, are welcome.

Reservations are required to ensure there are enough pins and refreshments.

St. John's

On Wednesday at 7 p.m., St. John's Lutheran Church, 1 E. Abbott St., Lansford, will hold an informal worship: a spiritual, peaceful evening service with Holy Communion.

All are welcome to this relaxed, brief musical evening prayer.

Feed the People hosts a dinner from 5-6:30, followed by a brief adult Bible study at 6:30 for all who wish to participate.

Palmerton Camera Club meeting

The Palmerton Camera Club will hold a macro photography workshop at 7:30 p.m. May 28 at the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 502 Lafayette Ave. in Palmerton.

Meetings are open to the public.

Bring your camera and tripod to the meeting for an evening of macro work.

Good macro photography is not simply standing close to the subject and pressing the button. The general rules of macro photography are really only guidelines to get you started. There is room for lots of experimentation and imagination.

Academic Awards

Pleasant Valley High School will give out its academic awards at the school tonight at 7.

Lions meet

The Western Pocono Lions Club will meet at 7 tonight at the Old Mill Pizza Restaurant in Sciota.

The club raised over $900 with its recent bowl-a-thon. The Stroudsburg Lions team won a trophy.

Chestnuthill historical society

The Chestnuthill Township Historical Society will meet at 7 tonight at the park building on Route 715 in Brodheadsville.

Board of Health

The May meeting of the Tamaqua Board of Health took place at the Tamaqua Municipal Building with Earl Boettger, Christine Zizelmann R.N., Shirley Becker and health officer Judith Hadesty R.N. in attendance.

The board reviewed the monthly report of Matthew Meyers, health enforcement officer, noting a total of 50 health licenses have been issued to date for the year. An additional five inspections were conducted, but had to be failed.

Complaints made and adjusted included: one building condemned as unfit for human habitation and three trash complaints.

Al-Anon meetings

Al-Anon group to meet Mondays at 7:15 p.m. at St. Katharine Drexel Church Hall, 120 E. Abbott St., Lansford.

Al-Anon is a nonprofit, worldwide support organization helping families and friends of loved ones suffering from addiction.

Cleanup day

Lansford Pool Board and volunteers will be doing a cleanup day Saturday at 10 a.m. at the borough pool. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated, plus push brooms, rakes, gloves, etc.

Trinity Happenings

Sunday worship with Holy Communion at Trinity Lutheran Church, 123 S. Third St., starts at 9 a.m. Music appreciation will be observed. Designated pastor the Rev. Nancy Moore presides. Coffeehouse fellowship follows.

Sunday school closing program for students ages 3 through grade 12 starts at 10:30 in Luther Hall. Classes resume in September.

Free yoga sessions are available Friday afternoons, 2-3 p.m. Enter at the Third Street office door to go to the youth room. Bring your own mat and water. No babysitting service is available.

Diamond Fire


The Diamond Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary will be hosting a basket social Sunday.
