First Congregational Church

Morning Worship and Sunday School for all ages will be conducted at 9 and 10 a.m., respectively, on Sunday at First Congregational Church, Coaldale.

The Kids Klub will meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 14, while choir rehearsal will take place at 7 p.m.

Morning worship will be held at 9 a.m. Sunday, May 18, followed by Sunday School at 10 a.m.

Vacation Bible


Vacation Bible School will be held at First Congregational Church, Coaldale, from 6 to 8 p.m. July 21 through July 25.

Achievement dinner

The 56th Annual Tamaqua Area High School Achievement Awards Ceremony will be held May 12 in the school district auditorium. Doors will open at 5 p.m. with the program slated to begin at 6 p.m.

Light refreshments will be available from 5 to 6 p.m. More than $150,000 in scholarship funding will be awarded to the student winners.

St. Matthew's UCC

St. Matthew's UCC will hold its regular worship service at 9 a.m. Sunday, May 11. They will celebrate mothers.

Sunday School is at 10:30 a.m. for every age.

Then at noon there will be a contemporary service with country/gospel music and communion will be served.

Prayer Shawl


If anyone would like to donate yarn or fleece material, or your time, to make shawls for St. Matthew's Prayer Shawl Ministry, it would be greatly appreciated.

The Slatington Lions Club will hold a board meeting at 7 p.m. May 14 at the Skeet Club.

Lion George Kutta III (May 2) celebrated a birthday, while Lion Herman Schiffer is celebrating a birthday (May 8).

New hours

New window hours in the borough of Coaldale are as follows:

Ÿ 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Mondays

Ÿ 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays

Ÿ Noon until 3 p.m. Wednesdays

Spring cleanup

Coaldale Borough will have its annual spring cleanup day on Wednesday, May 14.

Large items will be picked up, including washers, dryers, stoves, refrigerators and a limit of four tires/tire rims.

All items must have all chemicals removed and doors taken off.

In addition, up to 10 bags of garbage will be collected.

St. George's Russian Orthodox Greek Catholic Church

St. George's Russian Orthodox Greek Catholic Church, at 730 Church St, Palmerton, will have a service at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 10.

Historical society

The Monday, May 12 meeting of the Palmerton Area Historical Society will feature Scott Everett, trail manager of the Delaware and Lehigh National Heritage Corridor.

He will present a PowerPoint program on "Past, Present, and Future" of the 165-mile D&L Trail, which goes through the Lehigh Gap area.

There will be ample time for questions and answers.

Spring concert

The annual Tamaqua Area High/Middle School Spring Vocal Concert will be presented on Thursday in the school district auditorium. Doors will open at 6:45 pm. and the music will begin at 7:30 p.m.

The annual event features performances by the Middle School General and Select Chorus, the Senior High Concert Choir and the Jazz and Concert Chorale. This year's accompanists include Olivia Behr, Hannah Betz, Andrew Delpais, Antonetta Gerace, Francesca Gerace, Cailyn Joseph, Claire Lewis, Patrick McMullen, Sierra Petrucci, Faith Roberts and Olivia Stanek.

Summit Hill

Spring clean up

On Wednesday, May 7, Summit Hill will be hosting its spring clean up for the West side of town along with Laurel Drive and East and West Mountaintop Road. This day will also be regular garbage pickup.

Items to be picked up include: tires (no more than five), tire rims, auto body parts, refrigerators, freezers, vending machines, dehumidifiers, water coolers, heat pumps, washers, dryers and stoves.

Chestnut Ridge Seniors

The Chestnut Ridge Seniors will meet 11 a.m. on Thursday, May 8 at the Kunkletown Volunteer Fire Co. They will celebrate Mother's Day with prizes for all mothers.

They will be serving ice cream and are looking for donations of cakes.

Exercising seniors

There is a low-impact exercise class for those over 55 from 9:30-10:30 a.m., every Tuesday and Thursday at the Kunkletown Volunteer Fire Company.

Gardening helpline

The Penn State Master gardener program has established a horticulture helpline to answer gardening-related questions from Schuylkill County residents.

The helpline will be available now through Sept. 26. Master gardener volunteers will be available from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., Monday through Friday, with information about trees, flowers, shrubs, lawns, garden soil, vegetables, insects, plant diseases and more.
