Willy Porter

Milwaukee-based singer-songwriter-guitarist Willy Porter will be performing at The Mauch Chunk Opera House at 14 W. Broadway in Jim Thorpe, on Saturday, April 9, at 8:30 p.m.

Porter, a guitarist ,singer, songwriter, storyteller, and entertainer, defies labels and bends genres, moving between slide blues, acoustic folk, grooving rock, and soulful pop, creating a unique sound.

Porter's emergence as one of the artists at the forefront of the modern folk-music scene dates back to 1990 with his debut CD, "The Trees Have Soul."

The Lehighton Band will open its 147th season with their annual Spring Concert on Sunday, April 10, beginning at 2:30 p.m.

The concert will be held in the auditorium of the Lehighton Area Middle School on Beaver Run Rd. in Lehighton.

The concert, under the direction of Paul R. Smith, will feature a wide variety of musical styles.

Beginning with the famous Sousa march, "Washington Post" the program gets off to a rousing start.

Rod Heckman/TIMES NEWS Sixty-eight students from four Carbon County High Schools participated in the 2011 Carbon County Chorus Festival, held in the Weatherly Area Middle School. Participating high schools were Jim Thorpe, Lehighton, Palmerton, and Weatherly.

The 12th annual Carbon County Chorus Festival, held recently in the Weatherly Area Middle School gym, featured 68 students from four participating schools.

The participating schools and their respective directors are Eric Flowers, Jim Thorpe; David Perkins, Lehighton; Kathy McKeon, Palmerton, and Shannon Shughart, Weatherly.

The program opened with "A Jubilant Song," and included such selections as "Come In From the Firefly Darkness," "Tres Cantos Nativos Dos Indio Krao'," "In Flanders Fields," and "It Takes A Village."

Molly Hatchet will be performing tonight at Penn's Peak in Jim Thorpe. Opening for the Southern rock band will be Blackfoot.

Molly Hatchet has the reputation of being the type of band you'd find at biker rallies.

They're in the same genre as the rebellious Lynyrd Skynrd and Charlie Daniels. The band took its name from a 17th prostitute who allegedly mutilated and decapitated her clients.

Tonight at Penn's Peak, the Southern rock band makes a return visit to the venue. Opening for them will be Blackfoot.

The concert begins at 8 o'clock with tickets costing $27.

Although Molly Hatchet will be performing their major hits, expect to hear some selections from the newest album "Justice."

The Trinity Praise Band of Trinity Lutheran Church, Lehighton, will hold a benefit concert for Hunger Relief at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 19. The concert will benefit the Trinity Pantry and World Vision.

Trinity's Food Pantry (a satellite of Shepherd House, Inc.) provides emergency food relief for the needy in our community. World Vision works with people in poverty in the U.S. and works with nearly 100 countries internationally in poverty and responds to when disaster strikes.

Ever imagine what it must feel like to be stranded on an island?

Those who attend the Northern Lehigh High School Little Theatre Company's spring musical can find out for themselves up close and personal.

The three-day musical, "Once on This Island", will show at 7 p.m. Friday, 2 and 7 p.m. Saturday, and 2 p.m. Sunday in the high school auditorium.

Rock stalwarts Journey, Foreigner and special guest Night Ranger will all perform one night on one stage at The 2011 Great Allentown Fair.

The show is part of Journey's Eclipse Tour making a run this summer in major venues across North America. It stops at the Fair on Wednesday, August 31.

This is the third concert to be announced for the Fair's venerable Grandstand venue, celebrating its 100th year of existence this year.

"Kashmir" The Ultimate Zeppelin Tribute, will be at the Mauch Chunk Opera House, 14 W. Broadway, Jim Thorpe, on Saturday at 8:30 p.m.

Kashmir The Live Led Zeppelin Tribute Experience wanted to celebrate what some consider to be the number one rock radio song of all time "Stairway to Heaven." This is occurring 40 years to the day at the Opera House.

Kashmir is lead by lead singer Jean Violet who not only has what is widely considered one of the very best "Robert Plant" voices but he has an uncanny resemblance to the "Golden God" Robert Plant.

"The Music Man," the musical by Meredith Wilson that has in it the catchy tune "Seventy-Six Trombones" is coming to Lehighton.

It will be the 42nd annual production of the Zion Opera Workship, a non-denomination community theater based at Zion U.C.C. Church, Lehighton.

The show will be staged in Derr Hall of the church on March 3, 4, and 5 at 7:30 p.m. There will also be a matinee performance on Saturday, March 5, at 2 p.m.

The Sea Chanters Chorus of the U.S. Navy Band will be performing at Lehighton Area High School on Friday, March 18. The event is co-sponsored by the TIMES NEWS and Lehighton Area High School Chorus.
