Indians rip Fleetwood

FLEETWOOD - A year ago, the Lehighton football team relied on its passing game to pull out a come-from-behind win against Fleetwood.

Last night, the Indians switched up the game plan, utilizing a ground game to perfection to prevent the Tigers from making it a close contest.Senior quarterback Cody Scherer scored twice on the ground, TaQuan Chambers and Cameron Christman added scores, and Lehighton ran away with a 43-6 non-league win.Chambers opened the scoring with a six-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. It was in the second quarter when the Indians rattled off 28-unaswered points behind the efforts of Scherer and Christman. Scherer scored from two- and five-yards out, while Christman scampered 11 yards to pay dirt.Scherer, however, didn't want all the glory."This year, we know we have a talented line, a big line shall I say, and an experienced one, too," said Scherer, of Dane Frantz, Nolan Wentz, Jack Zimmerman, Ben Schatz, Shawn Truhe, Luke Becker and Dakota Heister. "So, we knew they could get the job done. And, we did by giving the ball to TaQuan Chambers, Cameron Christman and myself. And, we ran the ball down the field today."Scherer also paid tribute to lineman David Citro, who couldn't play his role as he was out with an injury. While the Indians' ground game had fun with the Tigers' defensive unit, Lehighton coach Tom McCarroll thinks his Tribe came out strong on both sides of the ball to make a statement."It was important for us to come out today, and no matter how we did it, and make a statement," said McCarroll, of the difference between last year's game and last night's game. "Our kids are not immune to what the papers write or some of the people in the area think."I think they took that personally this week. I think they had a chip on their shoulder and played like it. They played for each other."Scherer, and the rest of the Indians' first team provided enough of a comfortable lead that everyone seemed to get a chance to play part in the victory. McCarroll put three different quarterbacks behind center and gave seven running backs the chance to gain valuable experience in the trenches."A lot of people don't think that we have the talent that could succeed this year," Scherer said. "But, we all know that we're a talented team. If we play our hearts out, we can beat anybody."STARTING OFF ON RIGHT FOOT… Cody Scherer had an opening night to remember after finishing with two rushing touchdowns and a touchdown reception. The Indian senior finished with 11 carries for 87 yards and completed nine passes for 110 yards.ONSIDE, TWICE??… In their first kickoff after scoring a touchdown in the first quarter, the Indians attempted an onside kick. Though unsuccessful, that didn't stop them from trying again in the second quarter after scoring another touchdown. Though unsuccessful both times, that's not going to stop McCarroll from doing it in the future. "That's what we want to do," McCarroll said. "Sometimes special teams are a forgotten phase of the game. So, we want to make sure people prepare for us and not forget that phase."MOMENTUM SETTER… After the Indians fumbled the ball in the opening quarter, they went on a tear, scoring on five consecutive offensive series between the second and third quarters. It wasn't until late in the third quarter Fleetwood forced Lehighton into a turnover on downs to end the streak.
