Indian girls win track title

POTTSVILLE - There was no sure thing for the Lehighton track team when the spring came around this season.

Indians' coach Jim Blakeslee knew there was potential for his girls team to be pretty good. However, he couldn't predict just how good. Now he knows.Riding a wave of eight first place finishers and winning two of three relay events, the Indians punched out an impressive 93-57 victory over Pottsville to cap an undefeated Schuylkill League season and the Division 1 championship."It's so sweet to win the championship," beamed Lehighton's Cera Gaston, who had one of the finest days of the season, winning both the 1600 and 3200. "I mean, we didn't have a doubt about winning this meet."Early in the season, we knew we had enough returning people that we could be good. Then we added a bunch of freshman girls from a great junior high team and that really helped us.""This feels great," said Blakeslee. "Coming into the season, I thought the boys were going to be contenders this season, but the girls started developing. We had a lot of experienced kids returning but you could only score so many points from those who were returning."But when the freshmen class came in, that filled our voids. That made us even stronger and that's what got us to where we are."The Indians did a lot of winning. Besides Gaston's first place wins in the two distance runs, the team captured first place wins in the 400 and 800 meter relays. The 400 relay team was comprised of Rajah Quinones, Alexis Barndt, Karissa Hough and Grace Shanton. The 800 relay team featured Shanton, Katie Aaron, Tinaya Klotz and Madison Cressley. There was also one of those freshmen that came to the fore as Kaia Slaw picked up wins in the long and triple jump to nail down 10 of the overall points."I'm just so thrilled to be a part of this team," said Slaw in a jubilant tone. "I like helping my team. It's cool that as freshmen we have a really big role with this team."Lehighton also got a huge lift from both Jada Whiteman and Madison Sherakas. Whiteman captured the 200 and 400 meter dashes while Sherakas took the 100 meter hurdles and 300 meter hurdles. Also garnering first place wins were Rhylee Sherwood (shot put), Isabelle Meckes (discus) Emily Miller (javelin). The Indian girls weren't the only team to clinch a championship on Wednesday as the Pottsville boys avoided an upset bid by the Indians to post a 76-74 Division I title-clinching victory. The Indians' Tanner Heydt (100 and 400 meters), and Shae Blasiak (triple jump and high jump) both had mulriple wins. The Indians also won two of the three relay events. The team of Gavin Zehner, Mike Mayernik, Jackson Schaefer and Lucas Hoffner crossed the finish line first in the 400 relay while in the 800 relay event, the Indians were led by Nate Lucykanish, Caine Carpenter, Tony Tavella and Joe Petit-Clair.DELAY OF GAME... The meet got off to a late start when one of the meet officials was late arriving. Instead of a 3:45 start, things got underway 50 minutes later.RECORDS ...
