Schuylkill Township fires secretary

Schuylkill Township secretary Jamie Moore, hired Jan. 6, has been dismissed.

During a meeting Wednesday, the supervisors ratified a decision they'd made during an executive session June 12. Chairman Charles Hosler and supervisor Christine Verdier voted to dismiss Moore, while Supervisor Chuck Fayash voted against the action. After the meeting, the supervisors said they could not elaborate on the reason for the change, saying it is a personnel issue. Under new business, the supervisors said that an auditor, Dave Shelucsky of Pottsville, has been hired to audit the township's records for the entire year of 2014 and for 2015 from January through June. Verdier said the township will not advertise to fill the secretary position until the audits are complete. In the meantime, Suzanne Apanavage, who has worked part time for the township in the past, will work part time. The supervisors also finalized a policy to access a safe deposit box the township rents at Riverview Bank in Pottsville. At previous meetings, the supervisors voted to have computer passwords and office keys kept in a safety deposit box. After the meeting, Fayash, who had requested that the township get a safety deposit box, said that according to the policy, all three supervisors must be present when the envelope from the safety deposit box, which contains the passwords and keys, is accessed. The supervisors discussed the garbage contracts. There are about 30 past-due accounts from 2014, and the trash hauler will be directed to cease picking up from the delinquent households. Bills for 2015 have been sent, and specifications for the 2016 contract are being developed, so that it can be offered for bid.As they have in past meetings, some residents complained about police matters and hours of coverage. Verdier, who is the township's police liaison, said that she has not received any complaint forms from residents, and asked that any resident who has a complaint about police matters fill out a form. Resident Paul Benulis suggested that the township purchase a dash camera or body camera for the officer. The supervisors said they would look into it.Other residents complained about properties in the township where rubish has accumulated or grass and weeds have grown high. The township has been advertising for a code enforcement officerbut there have not been anyapplicants.
