Carbon Chief Deputy Coroner Jason T. Smith said a body was found Saturday afternoon in the area of Panther Creek and the #9 Coal Mine in Lansford.
At 2:44 p.m. Saturday, the Carbon County Coroner’s Office was requested to respond to the area for a report of a deceased man.
The man was pronounced deceased at 5:22 p.m. The individual has been positively identified through fingerprint analysis conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation Disaster Victim Identification Squad.
An autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday, April 21, to determine the cause and manner of death. The examination will be conducted by Forensic Pathology Associates at the Lehigh County Coroner’s Office & Forensics Center in Allentown.
At this time, the name of the decedent is being withheld pending notification of next-of-kin and to allow the family time to grieve their loss.
The Carbon County Coroner’s Office, in coordination with the Pennsylvania State Police, Lansford Borough Police Department, and the Carbon County District Attorney’s Office, is actively investigating this incident.
Additional agencies assisting with this investigation included the Carbon County Emergency Management Agency, American Fire Company #1 of Lansford, and the Lehigh County Coroner’s Office & Forensics Center.
Further information, including the identification of the decedent, will be released following the completion of the autopsy.
