Lansford official mistakenly livestreams closed session

A Lansford Borough councilman announced that he mistakenly livestreamed an executive session of borough council this week.

Councilman John Zym, who was livestreaming a morning budget meeting, failed to successfully shut off the stream afterward.

Council met Tuesday morning with representatives from Kafferlin Strategies to discuss preliminary budget numbers for 2027, as it seeks ways to overcome a $400,000 deficit.

Council then met in executive session with Kafferlin, which is formulating recommendation for a five-years strategy plan for the borough under the state Strategic Training and Management Program, at 1 p.m.

Zym posted on a Lansford social media page that he “screwed up and live streamed a portion of the executive session.”

“Well, it was not intentional,” he wrote on Lansford Community Expose the Ugly Truth Wednesday night. “I own the mistake. File it under learning curve.”

Zym then went on to criticize another community social media administered by resident Erin Soberick, Straight Talk Lansford Borough, which has called for him to resign.

“How long will it take for ST-LB to pounce on the mistake,” he wrote. “Sensationalize and blow things completely out of proportion. This is a problem, this is why we can’t have nice things. This is why we can’t have good, talented people contributing to the welfare of the community.”

The Times News reached out to Zym for comment but got no response.

Council President Joseph Genits said that he did not know about the livestream gaffe until someone told him late Wednesday.

“If he did, he has a problem,” Genits said in a text message Wednesday night after the post appeared on social media. “(I) will look into the allegation in the morning.”

Genits did not elaborate on implications of live video recording an executive session, which is a permitted closed-door session for council to discuss specific things such as personnel and legal issues.

An agenda for a special meeting tonight at 6 p.m. states Tuesday’s executive session was for employment matters, litigation and public safety issues.

Another executive session is planned today at 5 p.m. for solicitor and employee contract review.

The borough currently does not have a solicitor following the resignation of Bob Yurchak effective Oct. 14.

Council has not moved on hiring a replacement. Only one proposal has been submitted to date, Genits said. He was in the process of contacting firms to gauge interest and submit proposals, he said.

Chief contract

An employment agreement with Shawn Nunemacher, who was named police chief earlier this year, is one of the items on council’s agenda for the special meeting.

A four-year pact with Nunemacher is proposed with a salary of $95,000 for 2026; $99,750 in 2027; $103,740 in 2028, and $107,890 in 2029, plus benefits.

Other items include contracts for repairs at the concession stand at Ashton Park, and cashing out a certificate deposit from the pool account and transferring it to Parks and Recreation account.
