Carbon Co. tax collectors given good grades

Carbon County's municipal tax collectors are "doing a good job," county officials are saying.

Robert Crampsie, county controller, said his office conducted the annual audit of the 23 municipal tax collectors' collections for the year 2011 and reported it to the board of commissioners recently.Crampsie said that the tax collectors are collecting on average 94 percent or $10,669,767 for county tax collections throughout the year, 2 percent over what was budgeted for the year, which was $10,457,373.Under the Carbon County Tax Collectors' Policy Manual, each tax collector is responsible for submitting payments collected, as well as monthly reports to the Carbon County Tax Assessment Office. Those reports are then compiled and audited at the end of the year. Items looked at through the audit include the timeliness of report submissions, the settlement of real estate, debt service taxes and liens and delinquent taxes; and the tax collectors' compensations, which totalled $164,239.20 last year."The 2011 audit revealed an on-time submission rate of 94.7 percent," Crampsie said. "Although this is a good percentage rate we continue to recommend that all remittances be in accordance with county policy so we can meet our goal for on-time submission of 100 percent."I would like to thank the Carbon County Assessment Staff for their cooperation throughout the year in monitoring tax collector activity and Hal Hydro, controller accountant, who performs the annual audit," Crampsie added. The annual audit of municipal tax collections are held in accordance of Section 2 of the Act of May 25, 1945, the Local Tax Collection Law; and the Carbon County Tax Collectors' Policy, adopted by the county on Jan. 7, 2002.
