Lehigh Gap Nature Center events

There are a number of events coming up at Lehigh Gap Nature Center, located at 8844 Paint Mill Road, Slatington.

• Jan. 9: Long-term studies of bat populations in the Delaware Water Gap, 7 p.m. This is part of the speaker series. East Stroudsburg University mammalogist Howard “Sandy” Whidden will discuss his long-term research on the bats of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. He will include an overview of the natural history of our local bats and then discuss changes to the bat community following the appearance of the introduced fungal disease white-nose syndrome.

• Jan. 16: Cabin Fever Book Club, 10 a.m. This month’s book is “A Rum Affair” by Karl Sabbagh & Adam Nicholson. There will be a breakfast buffet supervised by Head Chef Lee Sivak with your help.

• Jan. 18: Winter bird survey, 7:15 a.m. to noon. Work in teams to bird a rectangular area around Bake Oven Knob. Then gather at Mama’s Pizza at 12:15 p.m. to tally results and have lunch.

• Feb. 4: Ornithology/Birding 101, 10 a.m. The class will explore ornithology in the classroom, learning interesting aspects of bird anatomy, physiology, and behavior and learn about the various groups of birds and individuals that occur in the region. In addition to lectures, there will be a field component to the class in which participants will get outside at LGNC and other local birding spots, plus go further afield with field trips to birding hot spots within a day’s drive. This is a 10-week course every other Tuesday through June 9. Registration fee for all classes: $25 for members, $75 for nonmembers. Registration is limited to 20 participants because of field trips (first come, first served), additional names will be put on a waiting list. Please mail payment in the form of a check to P.O. Box 198, Slatington, PA 18080 ahead of the first class.
