Coaldale passes chicken ordinance

Coaldale Borough Council adopted an ordinance that regulates keeping chickens on properties.

The ordinance passed unanimously at Tuesday’s monthly meeting.

“We’re OK with having chickens but there are stipulations. They have to be taken care of properly,” council President Rosie Hoben said.

Those who have chickens, she said, must notify the borough.

“So we can send our code people to inspect them and make sure that the animals are well taken care of,” Hoben said. “Now we have an ordinance that will stand in place.”

The ordinance allows up to four chickens per 0.10-acre tract. The fowl must also be kept in a secured area.

The ordinance was prepared by solicitor Robert Yurchak, who also presented council with a draft ordinance that regulates the use of e-bikes and scooters in the borough.

Council approved advertising the ordinance, which could be adopted next month.

At their September meeting, council members expressed concerns about people riding e-bikes in the borough and not heeding traffic signs.

In keeping with ordinances, Hoben said council is reviewing its noise ordinance to see if it has to be updated.
