Driver caught after high-speed pursuit

A Monroe County driver was caught following a high-speed pursuit on Sunday evening.

Pocono Mountain Regional Police said that at 8:59 p.m. officers on patrol attempted to stop a gray Ford Explorer for a traffic violation at the “five points” intersection of routes 611 and 940. The vehicle fled officers at a high rate of speed on Route 940.

Due to the speeds, officers ended the pursuit for safety reasons. Later the officers observed the same vehicle leaving the Econo Stay Inn in Paradise Valley after causing an estimated $1,400 in damages to the property.

Officers again attempted to make a traffic stop, but the driver fled at a high rate of speed. The pursuit continued through the Pine Hill Estates development and northbound on Route 196 before officers terminated the chase due to safety reasons.

Officers continued to check the area and located the vehicle along Carriage Lane. The driver was taken into custody and identified as Lance A. Whitfield II, 27, of the 900 block of Country Place Drive, Tobyhanna. He refused to submit to a blood test. He was evaluated by a drug recognition expert who found he was under the influence of a controlled substance.

He was charged with fleeing or attempting to elude police as a felony 3; driving under the influence, reckless endangerment (two counts), criminal mischief and other summary offenses. He was arraigned before a district judge and later released after posting $10,000 percentage bail.
