Carbon man given prison term after admitting drug dealing

A Carbon County man was sentenced to a county prison term on Monday after pleading to a drug dealing charge.

Francis W. Chambers II, 32, of Lansford, pleaded guilty to one count of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance.

After accepting the plea, Judge Steven R. Serfass sentenced Chambers to serve one day less 12 to one day less 24 months in the county prison rejecting a request from Chambers’ legal counsel, public defender Paul J. Levy, to impose a time-served sentence. Chambers has served 309 days in jail on the charge. Serfass also imposed two years of probation, concurrent with the jail term.

He was arrested by Jim Thorpe police on April 13, 2018, after officers learned of his selling illegal substances. When confronted by police, Chambers admitted to selling drugs.

Levy said that Chambers had a drug addiction problem at the time and has been addressing it with counseling.

Chambers, who was only recently released from prison on bail, told the court he had secured full time employment. He told Serfass, “I’m trying to make my life better.”

In addition to the jail term, Chambers was ordered to get a drug and alcohol evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment, zero tolerance for drug or alcohol use, supply a DNA sample, pay court costs of abut $1,000, pay a $50 per month supervision fee while on parole and render 200 hours of community service.

Serfass gave Chambers credit for the 309 days served. He will begin serving the remainder of his sentence, about two months, on Dec. 13 at 7 p.m. and serve it on consecutive two-day weekends.
