Bowmanstown adopts new snow ordinance

The Bowmanstown mayor can cite residents who don’t shovel snow, ice or hail from their sidewalks within 24 hours of it falling, borough council agreed Tuesday night.

The change came through the adoption of “a whole new ordinance,” as Council President William Ravert called it.

It repeals and replaces the borough’s previous removal regulation, where property owners who failed to clear sidewalks were sent straight to the magistrate, having to pay a $5 fine, according to Tracy Burbage, secretary.

Now, Mayor Zachary Snyder will be allowed to issue a $25 ticket to those who don’t maintain their sidewalks this winter.

That fine could also apply to people who park along dedicated streets during a snow emergency, who clear snow in a way that impedes access to fire hydrants or who dump snow onto public streets.

Citations must be paid within 48 hours of being issued. If left unpaid, the case goes to the magistrate and could result in a $500 fine.

Also on Tuesday, engineer Jessica Rehrig announced that an award letter had been sent to Ankiewicz Enterprises for their bid to take on the Lime Street project.

Council awarded the bid in August. It totals $824,699.05.

The project includes paving the gravel roadway between Lime Street’s end at Green Street and its beginning at Spring Street.

Rehrig noted that construction could start by the end of the month.

Council also appointed Rodney Reeser to fill a vacant seat on the borough’s planning commission.
