Panther Valley marks 50th commencement

Friday night marked a "golden" time for the graduating class of Panther Valley High School.

The graduation of the 73 members of the Class of 2014 marked the 50th commencement to be held under the Panther Valley name.To commemorate the event, all graduates donned full golden caps and gowns instead of the traditional black and gold garb, as they walked across the auditorium stage one last time; and alumni from the Class of 1965 were in attendance and honored during the ceremony.Speakers of the night included valedictorian Richelle Van Horn, salutatorian Jake Szczecina, high school Principal Joseph Gunnels, Aidan Cleary, class president, and Rosemary Porembo, superintendent of schools.Van Horn spoke about remembering their time throughout the years and the "piece of paper" she and her classmates were receiving."As we walked into school freshman year, we had no idea what was to come of our high school experience," she said. "We had no idea how high school would change us and mold us into the people we are today. But what were these past 12 years of going to school for? ... A piece of paper."But although it is merely a piece of paper, it represents the accomplishments, success, and dedication we have put into our education."She also remembered two classmates who have passed away, Evan Albertini and Matthew Aungst."Matt and Evan were two brilliant, humorous, and outstanding young individuals who are greatly missed," she said.
