Tamaqua man facing multiple charges

A Tamaqua man faces numerous charges after he was found driving a vehicle with an expired license plate.

Tamaqua patrolman Thomas Rodgers was monitoring traffic at Mauch Chunk and Pine streets at 5:20 a.m. on June 4 when he received an alert on a silver Chevrolet Cavalier that passed his position. The alert indicated the license plate on the car had expired, so Rodgers initiated a traffic stop on Route 309 at the northern edge of the borough. The driver was identified as James J. McKeown, 52, of 301 Orwigsburg St., Tamaqua, while the plate on the Cavalier came back to a New Ringgold woman. McKeown was unsure of how someone else's plate ended up on his car.Looking closer at the car, the officer noted an issue with the inspection sticker, then ran the vehicle identification number to determine the car's owner. The information indicated the car was McKeown's, but the original license plate registered to it had also expired.Several homemade "registration" stickers were found on the license plate. The last valid registration dates back to November of 2011.The vehicle was impounded and charges will be filed after the investigation into the plates is concluded.
