Resilient Bears bounce back

A short memory can only be beneficial to a young team as it develops.

A youthful Pleasant Valley team displayed the ability to bounce back during a rainy Eastern Pennsylvania Conference contest with Pocono Mountain West on Thursday. The Lady Bears showed no signs of a tough-loss hangover, after being the recipient of a 24-0 shutout against Stroudsburg on Tuesday.Forty-eight hours later, Pleasant Valley needed just six innings to defeat the Lady Panthers, 13-3."We were a little overanxious in the beginning of the order," explained Pleasant Valley head coach Steve Caffrey. "Our first four out of five batters hit pop-ups. Everything started coming together for us once they started to calm down, relax, and make some level swings."Caffrey's Bears trailed by one when it started to pour in the bottom of the third inning. Mother Nature wasn't presenting the only disturbance amongst the Broadheadsville atmosphere, as the Pleasant Valley bats began to storm all at once. The Lady Bears (6-7, 5-7 EPC) thundered for a six-run third frame, which included batting around the order. Laura Steckel drove in two on a smash up the middle, and Taylor Steckel supplied two more RBIs immediately behind her in the order."I thought we did really well," said Pleasant Valley catcher Cassie Hill. "We came from doing nothing Tuesday, and we got up there and hit. We were trying to be aggressive and we were all ahead of it early on. But, we adjusted as a team and got a hold of it. We've been working on waiting on the ball all season. Hopefully we can pull it together over the next couple of games that we have to win. We all have fun and work really well when we're all together."Hill caught for relief pitcher, Kelsey Diabo, who yielded just one run over the final three frames."I thought I pitched pretty well," said Diabo after shutting the door on West. "There's only two of us pitching this year, so we're usually back-and-forth. It always feels good to get a win after a rough week. At the end, no matter what, we're all still one big team and we're all there for each other. We're hoping to get many more wins by the end of the season."Diabo made sure that the door was shut, locked, and the alarm was on in the bottom of the sixth inning. Pleasant Valley strung together four more runs during the frame, which finished the game on the 10-run rule. The game ended thanks to Diabo's two-run single."Kelsey came in and did what she was supposed to do," said Caffrey. "She threw strikes and we made some plays behind us. All we're asking for the pitchers to do is to get ahead in the count and give our fielders an opportunity and good things will happen for us."COLLECTIVE EFFORT... Eight of the 10 PV players who appeared at the plate contributed RBIs during the victory.Caffrey said, "We're a young team and we're still learning the fundamentals and 'baseball smarts'. Once we progress from there we'll be able to do more things. Right now we're at a basic level."RUN MACHINE... Lauren Steckel had three plate appearances and scored after every turn she took offensively.PM West 002 100 - 3 6 5Pleasant Vy. 016 024 - 13 12 2Masker and Rivera; Scheller, Diabo (4) and Hill.
