Bombers rally for first win
This was the moment that Palmerton players, coaches and fans were waiting for.
During an 0-8 start to the season, head coach Ken Termini and company suffered frustrations throughout, yet witnessed the team's constant improvement.Progressively moving in the right direction, the Blue Bomber faithful also saw eight losses accumulate quickly.Thursday night, however, Palmerton finally got to enjoy its first win as a tremendous fourth-period effort led to a 62-50 Colonial League win over Northwestern."We have been working together for eight months now, and we've been waiting for this moment for a long time," Termini said post victory. "I'm just happy for the kids. They've overcome a lot of adversity, but never stopped believing in themselves."They never stopped believing in me, and I never stopped believing in them. I love this group of kids and I'm so happy for them."The contest was close throughout as Northwestern (4-4 overall, 2-4 league) maintained a lead for a healthy amount of the middle periods.Following a Justin Hosier pull-up jumper that gave the Bombers a 16-13 edge, the Tigers rattled off an 11-1 spree, highlighted by six points from Sam Yadush.Trailing 24-17, Palmerton closed to within two after Nate Dougherty's pair of free throws made it 24-22 with 1:47 left in the first half.Five straight Tiger points gave them another seven-point lead before a buzzer-beating trey by Palmerton's Ryan Yacone made it 29-25 at intermission. The third saw the two sides 'see-saw' evenly, before Yadush's drive down the lane made it a five-point cushion for the Tigers heading into that pivotal fourth.A Trevor Cunningham free throw made it 44-41 with five minutes to go, before Bomber freshman Hosier rattled off seven straight points during a 10-2 spurt that gave Palmerton the lead for good at 51-46 with under three minutes to play."We couldn't buy a shot in that fourth," Northwestern head coach Billy Hallman said. "Palmerton changed its defenses up, but I thought we adjusted and got some decent shots. But we just couldn't convert."Tiger frosh Deven Bollinger's turnaround cut the lead to 51-48, but Bomber senior Joey Suto drove past his defender for a quick two and assisted Dougherty on a three-pointer just thirty seconds later for a 56-48 lead, forcing Northwestern into the fouling game.Eric Baumgardt and Suto combined for a perfect 6-for-6 from the line the rest of the way to seal Palmerton's initial 'W.'"An 0-8 start is tough for any team to handle, and with a young base of players that we're building off of, I'm just constantly looking to facilitate for the team," said Suto, the sole returning Bomber starter from a season ago. "Hopefully, getting this first win propels us to more."BALANCED BOMBERS ...Doughterty continued to impress with a game-high 20 points for Palmerton. Hosier poured in 17 points and added eight rebounds, while Suto had 10 points and five assists.TOPPING THE TIGERS ... Cunningham's 16 points and nine boards led Northwestern. Yadush added 10 points and four steals, while Bollinger chipped in nine points and six rebounds.LOOKING AHEAD ...Termini is hoping the Bombers can now build off Thursday's win. "We're not done.
