Weatherly man sentenced for role in assault at jail

A Weatherly man admitted in Carbon County court on Friday his part in the assault on a fellow inmate at the county prison that resulted in serious injuries to the victim and a big medical bill for the county.

Jason Christopher Soraci, 24, pleaded to one count of assault by a prisoner, a felony 2, and was immediately sentenced by Judge Joseph J. Matika to serve 15 to 36 months in a state correctional institution.Soraci was one of six charged in the incident that occurred on Sept. 19, 2016. Also charged by Nesquehoning police were inmates Luis Reinaldo Aviles-Muniz, 20, of Hazleton; Kyle Joseph Anderson, 25, of Philadelphia; Bradesky Santos, 23, of Tresckow; Joshua Ynoe Mejia, 24, of Hazleton; and Kevin Alejandro Polanco Perez, 18, of Hazleton.According to police the charges are a result of the inmates entering the victim's cell and dragging him from his bed before punching, kicking and stomping on him. Following the attack, the victim was left lying on the floor of his cell. No other inmates alerted prison staff to the attack.Police said the victim suffered "very serious bodily injury," including fractured bones, multiple lacerated organs, internal bleeding and a concussion and was taken via helicopter to St. Luke's Trauma Center in Bethlehem, where he underwent surgery.Patrolman Carl Breiner reported in the affidavit of probable cause that following the attack, the victim told police that the assault was a result of a disagreement he had with Anderson over the use of a television the day before.Soraci apologized for what he did and said he was ready to accept responsibility for his actions. He also said, "I had a lot of time of think about my life. I believe I will be able to make something of myself."In addition to the prison term Matika ordered Soraci to get a drug and alcohol evaluation, supply a DNA sample, pay court costs of about $1,000 and when released on parole render 75 hours of community service.Soraci faces a big restitution bill. It was reported that medical expenses paid by the county's insurance carrier for the victim totaled more than $100,000. Soraci was ordered to pay $25,000 in restitution to the county.
