West End pets show off their costumes

Pets and owners alike donned their best costumes for the fourth annual West End Pet Halloween Parade and Contest.

Despite the chilly weather on Saturday morning, 15 pets showed off their costumes for a chance to win one of four categories: most original, scariest, cutest and owner/pet look-alike.The contest not only had cats and dogs, but chickens and a turtle as well.Tractor Supply in West End donated two gift cards for the contest winners. Other winners received a gift basket full of treats and toys for their furry friends. Every attendee received a small prize for participation as well.Pat Lessard won cutest pets with her two chickens, Buddy and Cuddle Buddy. The pair dressed as a bride and groom for the contest. Cuddle Buddy is a certified therapy chicken and appears at many local events free of charge."Try to keep a veil on a chicken," joked Lessard as she adjusted the costumes on her chickens.Mr. T and owner Debra Brickey won Most Original for their costume, "Turtle Beach." Brickey took in Mr. T after her son passed away in a car crash. Their participation was in memory of him. Mr. T is 17 years old.Douggie and owner Paula Horvath won the scariest category for his shark costume.Cooper and 9-year-old Angelina Bocano won owner/pet look-alike. They dressed up as ladybugs together.Many other animals were present, including dogs dressed as hippies and an Acme rocket, a cat and a parakeet.Ross Township is planning to open a dog park where they will hold the contest in the future. A 5K fundraiser will be held in May to raise money for the park. The township has applied for grants and hopes to break ground next year.
