Carbon inmates charged after fight

Six Carbon County inmates face multiple charges after they beat another inmate over a disagreement regarding the use of a television earlier this year.

Nesquehoning police filed charges against current inmates Luis Reinaldo Aviles-Muniz, 20, of Hazleton; Jason Christopher Soraci, 24, of Weatherly; Kyle Joseph Anderson, 25, of Philadelphia; Bradesky Santos, 23, of Tresckow; Joshua Ynoe Mejia, 24, of Hazleton; and Kevin Alejandro Polanco Perez, 18, of Hazleton for their part in the beating of a fellow Carbon County Correctional Facility inmate in his jail cell on the morning of Sept. 20.Aviles-Muniz, Soraci, Anderson, Santos, Mejia and Polanco Perez face counts of simple assault, aggravated assault, assault by a prisoner and conspiracy. Anderson also faces simple assault and harassment charges for an incident on Sept. 19; and Aviles-Muniz also faces three felony counts of aggravated harassment for an incident that took place on Nov. 8.The six were arraigned Monday before Magisterial District Judge Casimir Kosciolek of Lansford.According to the affidavit filed by Nesquehoning police earlier this month, the charges are a result of the inmates entering the victim's cell and dragging him from his bed before punching, kicking and stomping on him.Following the attack, the victim was left laying on the floor of his cell. No other inmates alerted prison staff to the attack.Police said the victim suffered "very serious bodily injury," including fractured bones, multiple lacerated organs, internal bleeding and a concussion and was taken via helicopter to St. Luke's Trauma Center in Bethlehem, where he underwent surgery.Nesquehoning patrolman Carl Breiner reported in the affidavit that following the attack, the victim told police that the assault was a result of a disagreement he had with Anderson over the use of a television the day before.During that incident, which was because the victim would not give Anderson the remote control, Anderson punched the victim in the face, causing a tooth to become loose. After the assault, the victim reported that he had heard Anderson asking other inmates to assault him and offer to pay them if they did.Anderson claimed he never entered the victim's cell on the day of the assault but was caught with the remaining five on surveillance cameras committing the crime.Breiner also reported that on Nov. 8, he was called to the prison after Aviles-Muniz became unruly and spit on three guards as they tried to get him back into his cell.He then yelled at the one guard that "I told you I would get you."Aviles-Muniz denied the allegations, but was caught doing so on surveillance cameras.Bail was set at $200,000 for each incident for Aviles-Muniz; a combined $110,000 for Anderson as a result of the multiple incidents; and $100,000 for Soraci, Santos, Mejia and Polanco Perez. All were then sent back to the correctional facility to await their preliminary hearings.A preliminary hearing date for all six has been set for Dec. 20 before Kosciolek.
