Rock slide closes Rt. 209 between Jim Thorpe and Nesquehoning

Route 209 is closed between the Liberties and Route 93 in Nesquehoning because the road is buckling, causing a hole in the road and a rock slide. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and fire police are on scene.

The incident happened shortly after 12:30 p.m. today.

Rocks are also on the train tracks, keeping the passenger trains from getting through.

Lehigh Gorge Railway posted, “ Due to unforeseen circumstances, all trains for today, Saturday, October 31, have been canceled. We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience. We will work to accommodate affected passengers as soon as possible.”

According to a witness on social media, the hole in the road is about 12 feet long by 3 feet wide.

We’ll post updates as they become available.
