W. Penn official seeks Atlas Park sketch
A West Penn Township official would like to see a conceptual layout for the creation of a recreational facility.
Board Chairman Tony Prudenti suggested the measure at Tuesday morning’s board of supervisors meeting with regard to Atlas Park.
“I think it’s time we have a master plan sketch, not only with the grant, but what the park commission was (planning) for the future,” Prudenti said.
Amenities could include inside basketball, a walking track and kitchen.
Supervisor Kyle Kester said he’d be looking for picnic tables.
Supervisor Tom Ackerman then chimed in on the discussion.
“I want a picnic area no matter what to generate revenue,” Ackerman said.
Prudenti said that while he agreed with that, his only concern was the cost.
He noted the township has until February to get numbers together to apply for a grant.
“(That’s) not a lot of time,” Prudenti said.
The creation of Atlas Park has been in the works for a few years.
In November, it was noted that the township was looking to get the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in.
In June 2025, the supervisors issued another plea for volunteers to serve on the park commissions.
That came after Prudenti said in May 2025 that ground for the township’s newest park, Atlas Park, was expected to be broken in June 2025.
At that time, Prudenti said he was hopeful that people would step forward to form a commission to oversee the park.
Atlas Park will be created on land donated by Dennis D’Angelo of Bella Terra Farms.
D’Angelo turned over about 25 acres of land near the former Atlas Powder Company to the township.
Township solicitor Paul J. Datte previously said that a deed for the land had been recorded.
Prudenti noted at that time that D’Angelo has agreed to volunteer on the commission.
The township received a $242,000 grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources several years ago to aid with the park’s development.
