Dunkin’ Donut, retail shops coming to Polk

Polk Township will be getting a Dunkin’ Donuts and a couple of retail shops following a conditional use hearing held for Kresgeville Real Estate Development LLC.

The 1.7-acre property is located on Interchange Road next to the Polk Township Fire Company. A lot line adjustment was approved for an adjacent property owned by the developers.

A 4,000-square foot building is planned with 1,500 square feet for Dunkin’ Donuts and 1,250 square feet for each of two yet to be determined retail stores. There will be a drive through for the Dunkin’ Donuts.

Fire Chief Billy Tippett expressed concern that people may park at the adjacent firehouse and the need for a barrier or fence. Supervisor Mike Hurley stated, “You see a fence and know there’s separation” as opposed to a vegetative barrier.

Tippett ask the board for upgraded the signs so people know that firetrucks could possibly be pulling out there.

Conditional use was granted subject to the land development plan addressing parking issues, stormwater and a fence between the firehouse and the businesses.

In other business, the fire company reported responding to 23 emergencies, completing 154 hours of training and 315 hours of fundraising for the month of May. The company has responded to 125 emergencies year to date.

An Local Share Account grant was awarded to the fire company, which will be used to replace Hurst Hydraulic tools with Hurst battery operated tools, allowing for stronger cutting and spreading strength.

After discussion about road paving and the difficulty with finding washed stone, it was decided to just tar and chip this year. Advertising will go out for this.

The Polk Historical Society is applying for a small game license to be able to hold 50/50 raffles.

Concerns were brought up about people not cleaning up after their dogs at the park. Bags are available at the park for this. Signs will go up noting if residents cannot clean up after their dogs the decision may be that no dogs are allowed at the park.

West End Holdings major subdivision plan received a concerning letter from the conservation district about wetlands and a stream on the property. Township engineer Russell Kresge noted, “We are reluctant to approve with this letter from the conservation district.” Three waivers were granted as recommended by the planning commission.

A public hearing will be held on July 27 at 6 p.m. before the supervisors meeting, for several zoning amendments.
