Three dogs, seven cats abandoned

Animal rescuers are seeking the owner of two adult cats and five kittens that were dropped off and abandoned Sunday night.

Carbon County Friends of Animals posted on its Facebook page Monday morning that at 6:30 a.m. Monday, two carriers which held two adult and five kittens, were found in the front of the shelter.

“How cruel (and illegal) to do this,” the post states. “We will do our best to find out who did these, and if we find out who you are, charges will be made.”

The post goes on to state the cats are safe now, are warm, and were fed.

Contacted Monday morning, Susie Yaich, president, Carbon County Friends of Animals, said they were actually left there at 6:27 p.m. Sunday, and found at 6:30 Monday morning by a member of the staff who took them in and said the kittens are roughly 4 weeks old.

“They were very hungry; she took them back and placed them in cages in our new intakes room, set up the cages, gave them water,” Yaich said. “The kittens were acting ravenous, and they immediately went to the food so they were obviously very hungry.”

Yaich said that while they have someone on the surveillance camera, but the license plate could not be seen with the way the car pulled into the parking lot. Because of the angle of the camera, they could not see the person either, or hear anything that they said, though the vehicle was some type of white SUV, she said.

“This is not just an act of cruelty, this is also an act of abandonment,” Yaich said. “This is not the proper thing for people to be doing.

“I understand that there are a lot of people out there who are no longer able to keep their cat. No matter what rescue or shelter you call, everybody is filled to capacity. We don’t know if these people called us or anybody else and were told there wasn’t any room, and just decided to drop them off (at Carbon County Friends of Animals) and leave them there.”

Yaich said they are being tended to.

“They have been fed, are warm, friendly, and will be taken care of,” she said. “If anybody has any information as to who this person could be, we would really appreciate if they would come forward.”

Yaich added, “We are getting calls all day long from people who either have found stray cats, some of which are very friendly, most likely dumped by people who could no longer care for them,” she said. “We are also getting calls from people about their personal pets that as a result of the economy, can no longer afford to care for them; it’s hard because of the economy to even feed your family today, let alone to feed your pets or to provide veterinary care.”

Yaich said anyone wishing to make monetary donations toward the care of the cats may send them to 77 W. 13th St. Jim Thorpe, PA, 18229, or go to their website, ccfoa.info where there is a QR code called Zeffy.
