The folks who attend Tamaqua Adult Day Care once again have a “home away from home.”

The day care building, at 801 E. Broad St., was damaged by fire on Aug. 8.

Since then, the people who attend the center had to find other places to spend their days.

But on Wednesday, Schuylkill County commissioners agreed to temporarily house the program at the Senior Regional Resource Center, 138 W. Center St., Mahanoy City.

The new quarters will cost $1,088 a month.

The 1,375-sq. ft. Resource Center needs some work to be adapted, so officials aren’t sure exactly when it will open. It also needs to be approved by the state Department of Aging’s Adult Day Care Licensing agency.

The fire at the Tamaqua center started in the basement at about 9 a.m. on Aug. 8, according to borough Fire Chief James Connely.

There were 17 people and four staff members in the building at the time, which also housed an insurance office. All were evacuated safely, he said.

The basement was filled with heavy smoke when firefighters arrived. The basement had smoke and heat damage; the upper floor had smoke damage.

The food and medications in the building had to be discarded.

The State Police Fire Marshal is investigating.

The day care center attendees, who are elderly or physically or mentally challenged, enjoy breakfast, lunch and snacks, and crafting, birthday celebrations, holiday celebrations, live entertainment, light exercise, bingo, puzzles and other games.

Transportation to and from the center is provided by the Schuylkill Transportation System and LANTA.
