Lehigh Twp. police thank community

Lehigh Township supervisors last week commended police officers for response to a threat incident on July 29.

Supervisor Janet Sheats said, “I speak for myself and others when I say, this goes for all the officers, thanks for stepping up.” The room applauded.

Sgt. Jon Roth gave the police report, thanking the community for support.

He said officers responded to a 911 call for a domestic when Sean Deibert was accused of injuring his mother and threatened to kill his neighbor. The officers requested assistance from Moore, Walnutport and Slatington.

Because the officer discharged his firearm, protocols are in place. Pennsylvania State Police were called in to handle the investigation and the Northampton District Attorney Office. The suspect was charged with assault and strangulation.

On Aug. 7, the state police added three counts of aggravated assault against the officers.

Roth said the officers are on administrative leave, which is a standard protocol; it does not indicate any wrong doing on the officers part.

“There are protocols that are required before they can return to duty,” Roth said.

“Police coverage remains a priority to us. A lot of our officers have stepped in to make sure the shifts are covered to receive the same dedicated service from our police department. Our officers have stepped up to work long shifts, and we will maintain uninterrupted police protection.”

Roth thanked residents who dropped off food and cards and the Lionesses for home-cooked meals.

“It meant a lot to the officers working long shifts,” he said. “I want to thank the residents for standing behind the Police Department. Your continued support is appreciated by all of our officers.”
