Jim Thorpe Borough Council will accept the resignation of Councilwoman Sydney Wernett at its regular meeting next Thursday, a departure that leaves a vacancy on the seven-member body with more than a year remaining in her term.

Council President Connor Rodgers announced the resignation Thursday during the borough’s monthly workshop session, offering few details beyond the effective date.

“We will accept this with regret at next week’s meeting,” Rodgers said. “We thank (Sydney) for her time and service. We wish her the best.”

Wernett’s resignation becomes effective Aug. 13, the same night council will formally act on it. Wernett was not at Thursday’s workshop.

Wernett was elected to a four-year council seat in November 2023 and took her seat at the council table in January 2024. Her term was set to run through the end of 2027.

The borough, Rodgers said, will follow its standard appointment process to fill the vacancy.

“We will accept letters of interest from residents who wish to be considered for that appointment,” Rodgers said.

A deadline for letters of interest had not been set as of Thursday. Rodgers said council could establish that timeline at next week’s regular session.

When Wernett was elected in 2023, she had won ballots for both a four-year seat and a two-year seat. She chose the four-year term.

Under Pennsylvania law, borough council has the authority to appoint a replacement to serve the remainder of the unexpired term. The seat would then be subject to election at the appropriate cycle.

Residents interested in being considered for the appointment may submit letters of interest to the borough office.
