Lansford Borough Council will hold a special meeting this week to approve a work agreement for its part-time treasurer.

Borough Treasurer Maria Ahner submitted her resignation last month, but agreed to work on a part-time basis until the borough could find a replacement.

Council accepted the resignation at their regular meeting and then agreed to change her status to part-time with no benefits at a special meeting the following week.

Her hourly rate would remain the same, and she would be doing some work remotely, Council President Joe Genits said last month. She would also have access to the borough building after hours while being a part-time employee, he said.

On Monday, Genits said Ahner wanted an agreement to continue her work as a part-time treasurer.

“She’s not continuing without an approved agreement,” he said. “If this is not approved, then there will be no financials for the Aug. 12 meeting and maybe no payroll done.”

Genits wants to call a special meeting for Wednesday at 6 p.m. for personnel matters only, specially to review Ahner’s work agreement, he said.

“I hope enough (council members) show up to review what we have as a tentative agreement to continue with Maria in a position as part-time treasurer,” he said.

The borough will be in a bind if council doesn’t meet and agree on an agreement for Ahner, as it jeopardizes payroll, Right to Know requests, bills to be paid and other financial issues, including signature cards for banking, Genits said.

“The secretary was not given any cross training,” he said.

When Ahner and Ashley McLaughlin, borough secretary, were hired in early 2024, the plan was to have them cross trained in each other’s roles, which each also serving as an assistant.

Council had planned to move ahead last month with advertising the treasurer’s position, but no advertisement has been placed yet on the borough website, social media or local newspaper.

Genits expects the ads to begin this week.
