Man charged with attempted homicide after shooting

A Lehighton man is facing attempted homicide and assault charges after allegedly shooting another man during an early Sunday morning dispute in Towamensing Township.

Police said David Munro, 44, called 911 at 6:22 a.m. to report that he had shot a man during an argument at a home in the 300 block of Lakeside Drive.

When troopers arrived, they found the victim under a covered patio behind the home with a gunshot wound to his left shoulder. Investigators said soot around the wound indicated the shot was fired at close range.

Munro was found sitting in a silver Kia Rio parked in the driveway. Police said he told dispatch before officers arrived that the gun used in the shooting was in the vehicle. Troopers later found a spent shell casing on the dashboard.

Before being taken to the hospital, the victim told police he confronted his wife and Munro after they arrived at his home. He said Munro was sitting in the driver’s seat holding a handgun and refused repeated demands to leave the property.

The victim admitted punching Munro through the open driver’s-side window. He told police Munro then fired one shot from inside the vehicle, striking him in the shoulder.

According to investigators, the victim retreated into the home and told his wife to call 911.

The victim’s wife told police she had spent Saturday evening with Munro and returned home with him after receiving repeated calls from her husband.

Their son told investigators his parents had been arguing because his mother had not returned home. He said he and his father repeatedly tried to contact both his mother and Munro without success. Around 2 a.m., he drove his father to Munro’s home in an unsuccessful attempt to find her.

Shortly before the shooting, the son said Munro sent text messages apologizing for being with his mother and saying he was bringing her home. He did not see the messages until after the shooting.

A witness inside the home told police she heard the victim and Munro arguing outside for several minutes before hearing a gunshot. Moments later, the victim came inside saying he had been shot.

Munro admitted firing the handgun but claimed he acted in self-defense. He told police the victim punched him through the open window, grabbed his shirt and tried to pull him from the vehicle. Munro said he pulled a pistol from his pocket and fired one round, calling it an “automatic response.”

Later, the victim told investigators he had been holding a baseball bat earlier in the morning but had put it away before Munro and his wife returned. He said he was unarmed during the shooting and confirmed Munro never got out of the vehicle.

Hospital staff recovered the bullet from the victim’s upper back and turned it over to investigators.

Munro is charged with attempted homicide, aggravated assault and simple assault.

He remains in Carbon County Correctional Facility after being denied bail and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing July 8 before District Judge William J. Kissner of Palmerton.
