Crews respond to structure fire at American Zinc Recycling Corporation

Various emergency crews are on scene at a structure fire that broke out Friday morning at the American Zinc Recycling Corporation in Palmerton.

Palmerton Borough Police Department patrolman Adam Shimer said the Palmerton Police Department and the Palmerton Fire Department responded at around 11:30 a.m. to the reported structure fire at the facility located in the 900 block of Delaware Avenue.

Shimer said preliminary information indicates that facility staff were performing maintenance on a conveyor belt when sparks from welding operations ignited the belt and coal dust, causing a fire.

He said the fire prompted a response from numerous surrounding fire departments, which assisted with fire suppression and scene operations.

At this time, no injuries have been reported, Shimer said.

The Times News will update this story when more information is available.
