STEAM camp merges fun, learning

Some built paper roller coasters.

Others made Bounce Bubbles.

What the students who participated in Northern Lehigh School District’s eighth annual STEAM Summer Camp all shared in common was they had fun while learning.

The camp was open to students entering third through sixth grades in the 2026-2027 school year.

STEAM summer camp provides students with student-centered, project-based, and inquiry-driven opportunities to investigate careers, conduct experiments, and expand their understanding of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics.

The program is made possible thanks to the guidance and sponsorship of the Northern Lehigh Education Foundation and local businesses.

STEAM Summer Camp began last week and runs through Thursday, and was for students in third through sixth grades at Slatington Elementary School.

On Wednesday, students were able to participate in escape rooms, programmed robotics, experimented with electric circuits and made Bounce Bubbles.

The guest speaker was Lauren Gower of Lauren Michelle Photo, who introduced the children to a career in photography.

Eighty-nine students took part in the program, said STEAM Camp coordinator Tim Weaber. That was up from the 65 students who participated last year.

“Enrollment is up,” said Weaber, who added they had about 80 students per day on average. “The kids are enjoying themselves.”

That much was evident as fourth-grader Viviane Baker, third-grader Daisy Artinyan, and fourth-grader Chevelle Humanick were busy designing and building roller coasters as the students worked with robotics.

“I like building a roller coaster because it’s about STEAM, engineering,” Chevelle said. “We put a marble down it to go down the roller coaster.”

But, the program wasn’t relegated solely to the indoors, as students were able to leave their classrooms and venture outside.

Much like his fellow campers, fifth-grader Finley Michalek was stoked to learn about bubbles.

“It’s fun because to get to try and keep doing it,” Finley said. “You get a big bubble.”

STEAM Camp director Jen Butz said there were different speakers throughout the camp for students to learn about various careers.

“We have a wonderful staff, the students are really enjoying themselves,” Butz said. “It’s nice seeing the students coming back every day excited, smiling.”

Butz added that the district was grateful for an EITC Grant to the district’s Education Foundation from The Neffs National Bank.
