Monroe commissioners detail history events
The Monroe County commissioners wanted to make the public aware of some upcoming events.
At the end of their meeting on Wednesday, Commissioner David Parker said there would be a presentation titled “The Past and Present of Lenape in Pennsylvania” on June 28 at Wills Mansion in Coolbaugh Township.
The presentation is organized by the Coolbaugh Township Historical Association and will begin at 2 p.m.
According to the historical society’s website, Shelley DePaul, clan mother for the Lenape Nation of Pennsylvania, will talk about precolonial life and cultural practices, relationships with William Penn, Penn’s Sons and the Walking Purchase, the Lenape diaspora, as well as where they are today.
Parker also announced that there are now five passport programs for people to learn more about Monroe County. They are: Pennsylvania Historical Markers Trail, Museums and Cultural Centers, National Historic Registry, Theaters and Venues, and Keystones. More information can be found at https://monroe.brightrtravel.com/passports.
“I encourage you to go and grab those and sign up for each one and go and visit interesting places in our county,” he said.
Commissioner Sharon Laverdure said that auditions for “1776” will be held in August. The show will be performed at Notre Dame High School in October. Although most of the characters are men, women are encouraging to audition, as well.
Laverdure also said the Pocono Summer Chorus will perform at 7 p.m. on July 23 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Stroudsburg. The choir is under the direction of James Maroney. The theme of this year’s performance is a celebration of America’s 250th anniversary.
About the music, Laverdure said, “Some you’ll know and some you’ll go, ‘Oo, where’d that come from.’ There’s a fight song that we’re singing that I never heard of before.”
There is no charge, but donations will be given to Meals on Wheels.
