Letter to the editor: Largest county landowner pays no taxes

Dear Editor,

I appreciate all the hard work and efforts our county commissioners put in to keeping the county taxpayer costs down.

We all pay tax on our property so that the county business can be paid for. Large properties with very expensive houses pay more than a small house in town. That’s fair.

Here is my problem.

Our largest property owner in the county (23,000 acres), is the city of Bethlehem, leasing the land to the Bethlehem Water Authority, pays no taxes!

In addition, they dam up Carbon County water and sell it to the residents of the city of Bethlehem.

Here’s a crazy idea. Why doesn’t Carbon County get at least a few cents per gallon pumped out of here?

Why are we always trying to figure out where the next, needed dollars are going to come from?

Get the right law firm, and push the City of Bethlehem, or their Water Authority, or both, to pony up their fair share of funds to cover the county’s bills.

Residents of Bethlehem can drink and shower in Gatorade or Monster drinks for all I care, or pay your fair share for our water.
