2 people hurt in turnpike crash

Two people were hurt in a crash Wednesday morning on the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike.

State police at the Pocono barracks said Ashley A. Freitas, 35, of Slatington, and Corey M. McCabe, 51, of Pottsville, were transported by personnel from the Lake Harmony Rescue Squad Ambulance Corporation to the St. Luke’s Hospital, Carbon Campus, Franklin Township. They said the severity of their injuries is unknown.

Police said the crash occurred in the area of mile marker 95.9 in Kidder Township when Freitas, driving a 2009 Ford Focus with McCabe as her passenger, was southbound. They said the car traveled off the right side of the road and struck an embankment before continuing southbound and hitting a 2009 Nissan Rogue that was legally parked on the right shoulder of the road.

Police said the Rogue was operated by Shawn T. Hawley, 54, of Madison, whom they identified as a turnpike employee. They said he saw a chain in the left southbound land and pulled over and parked the Rogue, planning to remove the chain from the highway.

Police said the Focus struck the Rogue in the rear before Hawley exited, causing the Rogue to flip onto its roof. The Focus continued south and then hit a concrete barrier.

Police said Hawley was still wearing his seat belt when the Rogue was hit and did not appear to be injured.

They said both vehicles had disabling damage and were towed from the scene.

Freitas was cited for careless driving, according to police.
