Community Safety Day set for May
Water safety will be one of the main highlights during this year’s Community Safety Day in May.
During the Carbon County Collaborative meeting recently, Chris Simock, representing Carbon County Kid Zone, spoke about the upcoming plans for the annual Community Safety Day, held each year as a way to educate children and families on a variety of safety topics. This year’s event will be held rain or shine from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on May 2 at Mauch Chunk Lake Park.
Simock said that the groups organizing the event are currently looking for vendors and organizations to set up booths with fun activities that teach children about a safety topic, from bicycle safety to how to best be prepared in the event of a fire.
This year, she pointed out that water safety will be a large focus, with water demonstrations being held at the lake by the Lehighton Outdoor Center, Lehighton Water Rescue from the Lehighton Fire Company and the Nolan Ritchie Foundation.
Simock said the group is working to see about getting a canine rescue team as well for water rescue demonstrations using trained dogs.
In addition to water safety, the always popular Coconut Crusher will be brought in to illustrate the importance of wearing a helmet when cycling, using a scooter or skating.
Organizations will also be set up around the park with information on their operations, as well an activity for children to do to learn about making sure they are safe.
There will be food and a bicycle giveaway drawing, as well as additional free giveaways throughout the day.
Sponsorship opportunities are available by emailing CarbonKidZone@gmail.com.
