No injuries were reported when a fire broke out Friday morning in the basement of a Tamaqua building that houses an adult day care and insurance agency.

“The Tamaqua Area Adult Day Care Center evacuated safely,” Tamaqua Fire Chief James Connely said. “There were 17 people and four staff members.”

One employee was inside the adjoining Tamaqua Insurance Center and was also able to get out unharmed.

Connely said the call for a commercial structure fire at 801 E. Broad St. came in at 9:04 a.m. Crews arrived shortly thereafter and found heavy smoke in the basement.

“It was a simple fire to extinguish,” Connely said.

The basement level received smoke and heat damage, while the upper level suffered smoke damage.

Connely said all the food and medications at the Adult Day Care had to be tossed.

He said the cause of the fire is under investigation by a Pennsylvania State Police fire marshal.

Tamaqua’s American Hose, Citizens and South Ward fire companies, Tamaqua Ambulance, Coaldale Fire Company, Panther Valley RIT and Ryan Township Emergency and Rescue Squad responded.
