Rush looks at stop sign removal

Rush Township supervisors said they’ll look at a stop sign that a resident believes is no longer needed.

Dan Christian, Hometown, asked if the sign at the southbound intersection of Hometown and Purnell avenues could be removed.

In the 12 years he’s lived in the area, he said he’s only spotted about five vehicles travel on Hometown Avenue in the direction of the stop sign.

“There is actually no use for that stop sign,” Christian said. “It just impedes traffic.”

Supervisor Jim Stewart said the sign was probably placed as a speed deterrent.

“That’s the shortcut when (Route) 309 backs up. They come down Grove Street and then they either go down Lincoln Drive or up Purnell to (Route) 54 to get around the backup,” Stewart said.

Former Supervisor Robert Leibensperger said the stop sign was placed around 2015.

“It was following the PennDOT traffic calming regulation because of what was going on,” he noted of motorists using alternate routes to avoid traffic.

The sign is also near Miller Park, a place where children and their families gather.

Stewart said a bus stops in the area to pick up and drop off students.

Chairman George Gerhard said supervisors will “take a look” at the sign.
