Blue Mountain cardboard derby has speed, fun
Most of the winter season, Blue Mountain resort’s snowtubing area is filled with guests enjoying the hills for their designated purpose.
Last Saturday, one hill hosted 39 teams of up to four riders competing in cardboard boxes.
Racers braved the wind and other elements to compete for bragging rights in vessels made only of cardboard, tape, decorations, craftsmanship, and ingenuity.
A fan favorite featuring competitors of all ages, the boxes were decorated as bumper cars, trains, toboggans, and even an aluminum can.
Ashley Seier, Blue Mountain’s director of Marketing, said the mixture of creativity and downhill excitement makes this event one to remember. “Our cardboard derby is perfect for the whole family. Some kids built boxes with their parents to compete, and many older adults also came out to have fun. And I am competing today, which adds to the level of excitement for me,” she said.
Several groups of Blue Mountain employees echoed Seier’s sentiment, joining in on the fun for all at the cardboard derby.
Racers came down one by one, starting at the top of the hill, intending to reach the finishing line.
Not all did so, with several wipeouts occurring.
No injuries occurred, and everyone got up with smiles on their faces.
A radar gun was placed near the top of the hill, measuring the speed of each box full of two to four contestants.
The fastest racers of the day, called the Bumper Car Classic, clocked in at an impressive 35 mph, earning bragging rights and a $100 prize in the process.
Other awards were given for the most creative cardboard box design, the best Kona Big Wave-themed creation, and the biggest fail.
Team Blue Bomber was awarded the most creative for their silver box resembling a fighter jet, team Big Wave Dave took home Best Big Kona Wave themed-box, while team Frenzy Friendly received the biggest fail award and a good laugh along the way.
