Local Roundup: Results from March 18

Northwestern’s track and field teams swept Palmerton in Colonial League action on Wednesday.

In other action, all four area tennis teams posted wins.

TRACK & FIELD

Palmerton-Northwestern

Northwestern opened the Colonial League season with a sweep of visiting Palmerton.

The Tigers rolled to a 119-31 win in the boys meet, while the hosts posted a 97-53 victory in girls action.

Sophia Schaffer and Rosalia Nestor led the way for Northwestern, as both collected three first-place finishes. Schaffer sprinted her way to wins in the 100, 200 and 400, while Nestor gained first-place honors in the 800, 1600 and 3200.

Shane Leh (110 and 300 hurdles), Logan Mesics (long jump, triple jump) and Mallory Conner (shot put, discus) all added a pair of firsts.

Ruby Walters was the only multiple winner for the Bombers, as she crossed the finish line first in both the 100 and 300 hurdles.

Lehighton-Wilson

Lehighton swept doubles play as the Indians downed Wilson 4-1 in Colonial League play.

Allie Conrad and Chase Lobasso won in straight sets, as did Kyra Shorten and Mia Nothstein.

The Indians also received singles wins from both Bekim Courilja and Phillip Ebbert.

Jim Thorpe-Salisbury

Jim Thorpe captured both doubles matchup to help the Olympians edge Colonial League foe Salisbury, 3-2.

The team of Alex Plesnarski and Jonas Lambert, along with Max Priore and Drayden Mathurin both won their matches in straight sets.

In singles play, Thorpe’s Trent Sutphin win in straight sets.

Palmerton-Bangor

Palmerton received victories from two of its singles players, and also swept doubles action in a 4-1 Colonial League victory over Bangor.

Levi Johnson and Colton Ruzicka provided the wins in singles action, while teams of Kevin O’Neill and Chase Sebelin, and Hadlee Lake and Andrea Bettini also contributed to the victory.

Pleasant Valley-Whitehall

John Hargrave and Isaac Klein both won their singles matches, and then teamed up for a doubles victory to help Pleasant Valley edge Whitehall 4-3 in EPC action.

The Bears also received a key doubles win from the team of Gavin Tonkay and Ben Jochen.

SOFTBALL

Jim Thorpe-Notre Dame-GP

Jim Thorpe took an early lead in its Colonial League opener, but couldn’t hold on as Notre Dame of Green Pond pulled away for a 15-5 victory.

With two outs in the opening inning, Gloria Strohl, Kylie Sullivan and Isabella Sully hit back-to-back-to-back RBI singles to give the Olympians a 3-0 start.

The Crusaders, however, stole the momentum with seven runs in the bottom half of the frame.

Hannah Zacharias accounted for Thorpe’s only extra base hit — a double. She also added a single, stolen base and a run.

Madison Schwartz (two singles, run) and Sullivan (two singles, RBI) both finished with multiple hits for the Olympians, while Strohl finished with two runs.

The Crusaders were paced offensively by Natalie Lilly, who had three hits and scored three runs.
